Bruise is also called a contusion. Contusion on knuckle is swelling and some bleeding under the skin, however no broken bones. This injury generally takes a few days to a couple of weeks to heal. - Elevate the hand to lower pain and swelling. As much as possible, sit or lie down with the hand raised about the level of your heart. This is especially crucial during the first 48 hours.
- Ice the finger to help lower pain and swelling. Wrap a cold source (ice pack or ice cubes in a plastic bag) in a thin towel. Apply to the bruised finger for 20 minutes every 1 to 2 hours the first day. Continue this 3 to 4 times a day till the pain and swelling goes away.
- If friend tape was applied and it becomes wet or unclean, alter it. You might replace it with paper, plastic, or fabric tape. Prior to taping, put a thin strip of cotton or gauze between the fingers to absorb sweat.
- Unless another medication was recommended, you can take acetaminophen, ibuprofen, or naproxen to control pain. (If you have chronic liver or kidney disease or ever had a stomach ulcer or GI bleeding, talk with your doctor before utilizing these medications.)

When to look for medical advice

- Increased pain or swelling
- Hand or equip becomes cold, blue, numb or tingly
